What is an interstate highway?

I’ve heard the term interstate highway a bunch, but I’m embarrassed to say I have absolutely no idea what that even means. Help!

Don’t worry—there’s a first time to learn everything!
An interstate highway is simply a highway that connects two or more states. Just remember, inter means between.
The opposite of an interstate highway would be an intrastate highway, or a highway that stays within one state.
And of course, the definition of a highway is basically just a restricted access road. That means that not everyone can access the road—specifically, slower vehicles (like a Vespa) or pedestrians.
