What is a wheel hub?

I’m helping a friend repack the wheel bearings on my car and there’s one part that I’ve heard of but am just unfamiliar with it. I’m new to car mechanics, and they are helping me learn. What is a wheel hub, exactly?

Your car’s wheel hub assembly is a key component in your steering and braking system. Located inside your car’s wheels (attached to the disc or drum brakes), the wheel hub is a preassembled unit featuring precision bearings, seals, and steering and ABS sensors.
Your wheel hub assembly helps keep your wheels turning freelyand securely attached to your car. It also triggers your anti-braking system when necessary.
