What is a good driving record in Virginia?

I want to get a better driving record to lower my car insurance costs in Virginia. My friend told me that you can actually get safe driver points that add up and can offset tickets in the future, but I’m not sure how it works. What’s considered a good driving record in Virginia?

Virginia has an interesting method of keeping points on a driving record—rather than using zero as the best record you can get, the state actually has a mix of demerit points and safe-driving points. This means that a good driving record in Virginia can range between 0 and +5. Anything in the negative means that you’ve had a ticket in the past two years, but have not taken a defensive driving course (which removes five demerit points from your license).
Every year you drive without a ticket, Virginia gives you one safe driver point, which is subsequently listed as +1. You can get a cap of +5, which is the best driving record you can receive. The better you drive, the more points you get, and the lower your car insurance rates become.
