What is a clay bar?

My friend told me to use a clay bar when detailing my car. But what is a clay bar?

Great question! A clay bar is a small bar (like a soap bar) made out of resin, and it collects or pulls out contaminants/debris from your clear coat.
Why is it important to remove these tiny contaminants you might not even see? Well, car detailing experts point out that they could create fine scratches in your clear coat/paint when washing and waxing your car.
Some tips to using a clay bar:
  • Before using a clay bar, first check to see whether you actually need to. * After you wash your car—but before you wax it—put your hand into a plastic bag and gently run it across your vehicle in various spots. If the surface is smooth, then your car is fine, but if you can feel grit, you may want to use a clay bar.
  • Do not overuse a clay bar. Experts recommend using one each time you apply wax—about every six months.
  • Be sure to use a lubricant along with the clay bar and carefully follow all the directions on the label.
Have fun detailing your car!
