The 2011 Subaru Outback’s
oil type is Mobil High Mileage 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil to ensure it runs smoothly on all sorts of driving adventures. We here at Jerry love old-fashioned shenanigans, but we also think you should know a bit about the motor oil going into your Subaru, how often you should change it, and any trouble signs to look out for.
The 5W-30 motor oil required by the Outback works well in both high and low temperatures. Both the 5 and the 30 refer to the oil’s viscosity, or how thick it is. The 5 means the oil’s viscosity remains thin at very low temperatures (the W stands for winter, in case you were wondering). The 30 tells you that the oil stays thin at super-hot temperatures as well.
You won’t have to change your oil as often when using synthetic—only about every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Synthetic motor oil is also easier on your engine.
Before you head out on your nephew-scaring extravaganza, be a good uncle and check your oil (do so regularly). Motor oil should be light brown or amber in color, and it should be smooth. If your oil is dark brown or black or if you smell burning oil or see smoke coming out of the engine, change the oil!
