What happens when your rearview mirror is set to night?

I’ve always heard people talk vaguely of setting mirrors to “night mode,” but I’m honestly not clear on what actually happens there. What happens when your rearview mirror is set to night?

Your rearview mirror is set to night if you have a button that activates your rearview mirror’s night mode. On a power rearview mirror, you may have a sensor that automatically adjusts your mirror’s tint to reduce the amount of light reflected at you.
If you have a manual rear view mirror, you can just flip a lever at the bottom of the mirror; this will adjust the angle of the mirror and keep bright lights from reflecting directly into your eyes.
While you’re inspecting your mirrors, it might also be worth taking another look at your
