If your car is stolen and you don’t have
car insurance
, you’re not only out the value of the vehicle, but you’re still responsible for anything you might owe on it, plus fines, fees, and penalties.
Whether you have insurance or not, the process for
reporting a stolen vehicle
is the same:
  • Call the police
  • Give a complete description of your vehicle, its last known location,
  • Provide the car's title
  • Contact your loan provider (if applicable)
Not all car insurance covers the cost of auto theft:
Comprehensive coverage
is the only type of car insurance that will reimburse you for a stolen vehicle. If you only have a state minimum liability-only policy, you'll be out of luck.
You can't insure a stolen car after the fact. Instead, focus on working with law enforcement to recover your vehicle and arranging alternative transportation. If the police are able to locate your car, be sure to get it covered immediately with a
full coverage car insurance policy
to avoid future losses.
