What happens to an electric car’s range as it ages?

I’m interested in buying an electric car, but in the past, I’ve always bought used cars that are over five years old. If I’m shopping around for an electric car, should I be concerned about the age of the battery? What happens to an electric car’s range as it ages?

Unfortunately, just like the lithium-ion battery in your phone or another rechargeable device, the battery in an
electric car
will lose range with time and use.
Buying an electric car secondhand
is still a viable option, however, as an electric car that has been lightly used with a well-cared-for battery can often work just as well as a new one.
Electric car batteries are also federally mandated under warranty for the first 100,000 miles. Studies done on a Tesla Model 3 have shown that even after 100,000 miles, there is minimal battery degradation. On average, lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles only lose about 1-2% of range for each year of use.
