What happens if you put your car in park while driving?

What would happen if I put my car in park while I was driving? Someone told me once that my engine would explode, which I don’t believe, but I don’t know what would actually happen.

You’re right—your engine won’t explode if you put your car in park while you’re driving! Actually, in an automatic car not much will happen. You’ll probably hear a clicking noise while the parking mechanism attempts to slide into gear, but your car usually won’t enter park until your vehicle stops moving.
However, even though your engine won’t explode, it’s still not a good idea to put your car into park before you’ve stopped completely. Doing so can:
  • Damage your parking mechanism by tearing out the teeth that hold your car in place while parked
  • Put a strain on other parts of your car
