What happens if you have a seizure while driving?

After years of trouble diagnosing my symptoms, I was recently told I have a seizure disorder. One of my first concerns that came to mind was my ability to drive to and from work. What happens if I have a seizure behind the wheel?

I’m so sorry to hear this. While you can still drive if you’ve had seizures, keep in mind that having a seizure behind the wheel can cause you to lose control of the car. That can lead to dangerous situations for you and the drivers around you.
Generally, the greatest factors in determining safety in driving with seizures are the following:
  • The source of your seizures
  • The type and severity of seizures you have
  • The state laws where you live
  • The length of time you’ve gone without having a seizure
Each situation is unique and you have to put your health and safety at the forefront. Some medications successfully stabilize seizures, so you may want to discuss that with your doctor.
In any case, it’s best to have high-quality insurance in your back pocket should anything go awry. Drivers who have experienced seizures could benefit from full coverage
