I’m so sorry to hear this! While your insurance premium won’t increase if you’re the victim of an accident involving a stolen car, you will need to file a claim with your own insurance company.
If you have uninsured motorist coverage or comprehensive coverage, you will be able to collect reimbursement for damages the accident caused. The insurance policy of the driver whose car was stolen is not responsible to pay for these damages.
If you’re carrying collision insurance, the damage to your car will be covered, but any medical bills you rack up as a result of the crash will not. Remember, all of these policies require you to pay a deductible before you get a helping hand, too.
If you lack these types of coverage, you’ll likely be responsible for paying for the damages on your own. In the event that the thief who caused the crash is caught and charged, you may have the opportunity to seek restitution as part of their sentencing for the crime.
