What does the wrench light in my 2017 Lincoln MKX indicate?

I drive a 2017 Lincoln MKX and lately I’ve noticed resistance when shifting gears, but also that an orange wrench light icon is lit up my dashboard—what does that light indicate?

Lincoln MKX
 has turned on indicate an issue with your vehicle’s powertrain system.
It’s not a good idea to continue driving with the wrench light on, as it could result in serious—and costly—damage to your engine, drivetrain, and/or transmission.
For this reason, we recommend you take your vehicle to a local auto shop or mechanic as soon as possible. They’ll be able to use a scanner to check the engine computer for trouble codes, which will help pinpoint the exact location of the issue.
