My driver’s ed teacher told me that the IPDE abbreviation would be on an upcoming quiz. I must’ve missed that lesson because I have no clue what that is. What is the IPDE method of driving?

The IPDE method of driving stands for identify, predict, decide, and execute. By understanding and using these defensive driving strategies on the road, you can protect yourself from weather, other motorists, and more.

safer driver
by giving you the tools to react quickly. Here’s how it works:- Identify: Scan ahead to locate potential hazards in or around the roadway. This might include inclement weather, pedestrians, emergency vehicles, or anything that may pose a problem.
- Predict: Attempt to predict what the motorists and pedestrians may do. Anticipating the actions of others can help you make the right move.
- Decide: Once you’ve predicted what other drivers may do or issues that hazards may cause, make a decision. Sometimes, this will have to be a split-second decision but don’t second guess yourself.
- Execute: Follow through on your decision. Whether you need to slow down, switch lanes, or brake to a stop, this is where you put the driving skills you’ve learned to the test.
