What does renters insurance cover in Texas?

I am required to carry renters insurance by my landlord. I live in San Antonio. What will renters insurance cover in Texas?

Great question! While
Texas
doesn’t legally require renters insurance, some landlords require tenants to have insurance per their lease.
Here’s what a renters insurance policy generally covers:
  • Damage to your personal property
  • Theft of your personal property
  • Personal liability costs
  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Loss of use costs
A renters policy does not usually cover:
  • Damage to the physical building
  • Damage to your vehicle parked in a rental space
  • Floods
It’s a good idea to carry renters insurance, whether or not your landlord requires it. The monthly fee is usually less than $20, but you could receive thousands in reimbursements if a hazard listed in your policy wipes out your home.
Most policies are customizable, depending on which items need to be insured.
