What does power shifting mean?

I’ve heard the term power shifting a few times but I’ve never had any idea what it meant. What is it and should I learn how to do it?

We’ve all got those words that we hear without knowing what they mean, but I’m glad you took the time to ask. Power shifting can be confusing, especially if you don’t drive manual cars much.
Power shifting is a method of shifting that can only be performed if your car has a manual gearbox. To powershift, you change gears without stopping your acceleration. In theory, this allows you to keep up your speed since your wheels remain powered.
Some people power shift to keep up their speed, while others do it because they see it as a sign of skill. The problem is, power shifting has some drawbacks, especially when it comes to the health of your car. Some parts that can be damaged include:
  • The clutch
  • The drivetrain
  • The transmission
In addition, power shifting can be dangerous if not performed properly. It’s best to lift your foot off of the accelerator when you need to shift gears, to avoid
damage to your car
and to yourself.
