What does MSM mean in driving?

I’m learning how to drive, and everyone keeps telling me to remember MSM. I think I learned what it meant once, but I can’t remember! Why is MSM important in driving?

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to driving, but try not to worry. MSM stands for mirrors, signal, maneuver, and it’s meant to remind you to stay aware of your surroundings while driving.
Imagine you’re trying to change lanes on the freeway. Using MSM, the driver would:
  • Check their mirrors for any oncoming cars
  • Signal which way they intend to move
  • Carefully maneuver as they indicated
Following these steps builds safe driving habits by communicating your intentions to other drivers. In fact, MSM is so important for safe driving that some driving test proctors may fail students who don’t employ it properly.
If you could use more driving guidance, consider taking a
defensive driving course
. While you’ll likely go over important information like MSM, you may also qualify for discounted
car insurance
once you get your license.
