What does it mean to adopt a highway?
I thought my dad was making a joke when he said his church “adopted a highway,” but I guess you can actually do that. What does that mean?

It’s not just a dad joke! Adopting a highway means an organization volunteers to provide litter removal on a section of a highway in exchange for having its name posted on a sign. Here’s more on that:
- Adopt-a-Highway and Sponsor-a-Highway are promotional campaigns and highway beautification programs meant to encourage volunteers to keep a section of the highway litter-free.
- In exchange for regularly removing litter from a section of a highway, an organization (i.e. a church or club) is allowed to have its name printed on a sign in the section of land it helps to maintain.
