What does implied consent mean in driving?

I’m really confused by the implied consent law that we’re studying in my driving class right now. I know it has something to do with drunk driving, but I’m not sure what. Can you explain it to me?

Implied consent can be confusing, so it’s understandable that you’re feeling a little lost! In driving, implied consent refers to an automatic penalty that is imposed on any driver who refuses to take a BAC test that has been requested by a police officer. The penalty in most states is
license suspension
.
These laws are in place because the police cannot legally breathalyze you without your consent. These penalties are meant to deter potentially intoxicated drivers from refusing the breathalyzer test, thereby making it more difficult for the police to obtain evidence that the driver was intoxicated when they were pulled over.
