What does GTI stand for?

I’ve been reading up on performance cars, and I keep coming across the acronym “GTI.” What does that stand for?

GT (or “Grand Touring”) cars were offered as high-performance options focused on speed and agility. The “I” for “Injection” referred to the fact that the 3500 was fuel-injected—a performance feature popularized in the late 1950s and early 1960s for its superiority to carburetors.
To put it simply, a GTI is a Grand Touring model with fuel injection.
