What do the rotors on a car do?

I took my car in for an oil change and the mechanic said my brake rotors needed to be replaced. I don’t really know what brake rotors even are, much less if I need to get them replaced. What do rotors on a car do? How often should they be replaced?

Basically, the brake rotors on your car are metal discs on your wheels that help slow your car down when you hit the brakes. Calipers squeeze your brake pads together and the brake pads rub against the brake rotors to create enough friction to stop your vehicle.
Since brake rotors are subjected to a lot of friction, they eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Here are some clues that it might be time to change your brake rotors:
  • Vibrating steering wheel
  • Grinding or other noises when you brake
  • Visible cracks, discoloration, or corrosion on the rotors
  • Decreased brake sensitivity
  • Strong chemical fumes
Having your brake pads and rotors checked during routine maintenance can help you catch any problems before they cause a big issue. You can also do some regular maintenance on your car insurance by comparing rates with the
