What do the dash lights on my Volkswagen Beetle mean?
I absolutely love my Volkswagen Beetle, but lately the car has had some maintenance problems. Yesterday, another light showed up on my dashboard. I can’t keep track of all these lights and how to address them. What are the meanings of the dash lights in my Volkswagen Beetle?

With so many different symbols, it can be tricky to remember what each light on your dashboard means. However, it’s important to address these lights sooner than later, as they can indicate maintenance concerns and serious safety hazards in the vehicle.
The general rule is: if it’s yellow, be cautious and check it out as soon as possible. If it’s red, stop the vehicle and call for assistance.
The most common red dash lights and their meanings in the Volkswagen Beetle include:
- Coolant Level Low/Coolant Temperature High: Stop and check your coolant levels. Check your owner’s manual for more information.
- Direct-Shift Gearbox Transmission Too Hot: Stop the vehicle and allow the transmission to cool with the gear shifter in park.
