What do I need to sell my car in California?

For a variety of reasons, I’ve decided to move away from California. Although I love my car, it’s not going to be coming with me. How can I sell it?

If you decide to sell your car privately in California, you’ll need the following in order to complete the sale:
  • Current vehicle title and transfer forms
  • Smog certification and
    vehicle emission statement
  • Odometer reading
  • CarFax report (optional, but recommended) or maintenance records
  • Signatures from both buyer and seller
