What do I do if USAA canceled my car insurance?

I just received a cancellation notice from USAA for my auto insurance policy. I thought I had my payments set up on autopay, but I guess I messed up. What should I do?

We don’t ever recommend panicking, but it is important that you act quickly to avoid a lapse in your
car insurance
coverage. Your first order of business should be to discover if your policy is already canceled or if you still have a chance to bring your account current and maintain coverage. In either case, you should call a USAA representative at 1 (800) 531-8722 immediately. They will be able to explain your policy status and help you resolve the issue.
Make sure you act fast. That is, unless you want to find out
how a car insurance lapse impacts your rates
. Not only might you be facing significantly higher premiums than before, but you may also face penalties enforced by your state.
Depending on where you live, failing to maintain the
minimum car insurance required in your state
can result in everything from fines to license suspension.
