What do I do if my car was hit while parked on the street and I have no insurance?

Someone hit my car while it was parked on the street. Unfortunately, I was out of town and my insurance lapsed while I was gone, so I’m not sure what to do next. What should I do if my car was hit while parked on the street but I don’t have insurance?

Unfortunately, without
car insurance
, all you’ll likely be able to do is count your losses and pay for the damages out-of-pocket.
  • You won’t be able to file a claim since your
    insurance coverage had lapsed
at the time of the accident.
  • Filing a police report for a hit-and-run will only divulge that
    you don’t have insurance
for a vehicle that was parked on public property, which may result in a ticket.
Best case scenario: Check footage from any cameras around your parking spot to nail down the exact timeline when your car got hit and try to get information on the at-fault driver. You may be able to
file a claim
if the accident happened before your car insurance lapsed.
