What do I do if my 2001 Honda Odyssey sliding door won’t open?

My car is on the older side, but I’ve taken great care of it. The other day, though, the sliding doors just stopped working all of a sudden. What should I do if my 2001 Honda Odyssey sliding door won’t open?

If your 2001
Honda Odyssey
’s sliding doors won’t open, your best bet is to reset the sliding door control module first. Here’s how:
  • Look to the control panel to the left side of the steering wheel, where the automatic sliding door control buttons are. Flip the switch to the “off” position.
  • Go to the passenger side fuse box, and remove the plastic cover panel. Look at the white label inside the panel to see which fuses are connected to the sliding doors (typically in Honda Odysseys, this is fuse one and five).
  • Unplug the fuses connected to the sliding doors
  • Manually open and close your sliding doors
  • Reconnect the fuses
  • Switch the automatic sliding door switch back to the “on” position
That little reset may do the trick. But, in case it doesn’t, there’s one more hands-on method you can try yourself:
  • Remove the plastic trim panel at the bottom of the sliding doors
  • Remove the two 7-mm bolts holding the door switch in place
  • Clean and lubricate the door switch
  • Reinstall the door switch
  • Clean the sliding door contact panels with fine grit sandpaper
If either of those two methods don’t work, it may be time to visit a local Honda mechanic.
