What countries accept an international driving permit?
I am traveling to Argentina and a couple of other countries in South America with my husband. We were told that we need to get an international driving permit if we want to rent a car. Which countries accept IDPs?

That’s correct—if you want to rent a car and drive internationally, most countries require you to have an international driving permit (IDP). In general, all of the countries that have signed the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic accept an international driving permit to drive legally.
That said, if you’re heading to South America, you may be better off with an Inter-American Driving Permit, or IADP. Certain countries in South America—specifically Brazil and Uruguay—didn’t sign the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic treaty, so they only accept an IADP.
If you’re unsure whether the country you’re traveling to requires an IDP, you can check the requirements through the tourist office, embassy, or consulate—or ask the rental car company you’re using.
