What are the safety ratings for the Toyota 4Runner?
The new Toyota 4Runner looks freakin’ awesome! Unfortunately, I’ve been known to get in an accident or two in the past, so I want to make sure that the 4Runner is still somewhat safe. What is the safety rating for the Toyota 4Runner?

Toyota 4Runner
! While it’s a great off-road machine and comes loaded with features, it’s a bit lacking in safety compared to similar models. Still, the safety ratings for the Toyota 4Runner are decent, with four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).The 4runner also earned a “Moderate” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which is the equivalent of two out of four stars. Due to poor crash tests in the past, Toyota has done quite a bit to improve the safety of one of its top-selling SUVs.
Some of the modern safety features include:
- Eight standard airbags
- Backup camera
- Side-impact door beams
- Tire pressure monitor system
- Toyota Star Safety System
Toyota Safety Sense P also comes standard on all 4Runner models, offering:
- Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
- Dynamic radar cruise control
- Lane departure alert
- Automatic high beams
