What are the rules for driving an ATV in New York?

What should I know about driving an ATV in New York? My father gave my 14-year-old daughter an ATV for her birthday. We plan only to allow her to drive it on our farm and not on any public roads. What rules should I be aware of?

“That is a pretty cool present for a 14-year old! The good news is that you do not need to be a licensed driver in
New York
to drive an ATV. Drivers between the ages of 10 and 15 can drive an ATV with adult supervision or alone on private property owned by their parents.
Even though you keep the AVT on private property, all ATVs in NY must be registered and insured. You will need to bring the following items to the DMV for registration:
  • Proof of ownership
  • Proof of sales tax payment
  • ID and proof of birth date
  • Proof of insurance
  • $25 for new plates and registration
Check with your current car insurance company to see if they offer ATV insurance. If they don’t offer ATV insurance, you may want to evaluate all of your insurance needs. Use the

Good luck–your daughter is about to have a lot of freedom!”
