What are the penalties for a fake insurance card in Maine?

My brother got his driver’s license a couple of years ago but my parents recently took him off of the family car insurance policy. He says it’s too expensive and he doesn’t want to pay for it, so he’s thinking about forging coverage. I’m hoping to talk him out of it. Can you tell me the penalties for a fake insurance card in Maine?

Insurance is expensive—but it can also be expensive if you’re caught driving with fake proof of insurance in Maine.
Presenting proof of false insurance is considered just as serious of a crime in Maine as driving without it. If charged, it is a class E misdemeanor, which carries up to $1,000 in fines and six months in jail.
