What are the consequences of impaired driving?

What happens if you’re caught driving while impaired in some way? Do the charges change if you’re caught driving drunk versus high? I’m doing a presentation about this for class and I’m still confused.

It’s great that you’re learning about this stuff! One reason that laws like this can be confusing is that the consequences vary by state when you’re caught
driving while impaired
in some way. Common consequences include:
  1. Heavy fines, usually over $1,000
  2. License suspension or revocation
  3. Jail time
  4. An ignition interlock device
In many states, driving drunk is treated the same as driving high.
Another potential consequence of driving while impaired is an increase in your insurance rates. Luckily, the
Jerry
app can help you make sure that you’re still getting the best rate available to you, no matter what your driving record looks like.
