What are the best tires on the market for a Subaru Outback?

This past summer my wife and I invested in a brand new 2022 Subaru Outback Premium. We’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and so far we love this car a lot. But eventually we’ll need to replace the tires, so what should we get? What are the best tires for a Subaru Outback?

Congrats on getting your new
Subaru Outback
! It’s unstoppable in the snow, and super fun to drive year-round.
There’s a seemingly endless list of tires to choose from for this car, whether you have the 17” 225/65R17 or 18” 225/60R18 tires. Your Premium has the 17” wheels, by the way, along with the top-tier Wilderness trim.
Here are some of the most popular options Subaru Outback aficionados tend to suggest in Outback forums—this is a question that tends to come up a lot in these subie groups:
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail
  • Michelin Defender T+H
  • Michelin Defender LTX
  • Michelin Latitude Tour HP
  • Pirelli Scorpion ATR
  • Continental Pro Contact TX
  • Cooper Endeavor Plus
Despite the Outback being virtually unstoppable in the snow, we strongly recommend investing in winter tires, especially if you live in areas where plowing isn’t common. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Bridgestone Blizzak WS90
  • Michelin X-Ice
  • Pirelli Scorpion Winter
Here’s an important disclaimer that not every Subaru dealership warns owners about, though they should: apart from the RWD Subaru BRZ, every Subaru model has a symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system. You need to replace all four tires on these cars at once, unlike most other cars. It can goof up your AWD if you don’t.
We know that’s expensive, but the Outback is one of the most reliable and safest vehicles on the road. And hey, it’s not so bad when you consider the hundreds of dollars per year you’ll be saving when you switch
