What are the best things to do in DC?

I’m 30 years old, and I’ve never visited the nation’s capital. Since I love history, I feel like it’s a pilgrimage I need to take. What are some of the best things to do in Washington DC?

According to one study, one in four Americans have never been to
Washington, D.C.
, so you certainly aren’t alone. But if you’re a history buff, it’s a quintessential stop you simply have to make. While the Lincoln Memorial, White House, and Washington Monument are obvious options, don’t just stay on the National Mall. Instead, here are some of the best things to do in D.C.:
  • Walk along the Tidal Basin. The famous backdrop of Jenny and Forrest reuniting in Forrest Gump, the Tidal Basin is a two-mile pond that provides a great foreground to some of the city’s many monuments and attractions.
  • Go to the Smithsonian. If you’re a history buff, expect to spend two or three days at one of the many branches of the museum.
  • Go to the 9:30 Club. If you’re a music fan or even a music history fan, a visit here is a must. It’s been ranked one of the top 10 live music venues in the country and has hosted bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Public Enemy.
You don’t need a car to experience D.C. to the fullest, but in the country’s fifth most expensive city, a little extra money goes a long way. Review your car insurance policy and then use the
