What are the best things to do in Austin, TX?

My daughter is going to college at the University of Texas. My husband and I are going to help her move her stuff down in August, but we’re going to stay for about a week to explore the city. What are some of the best things to do in Austin?

How exciting to be the proud parent of a Longhorn! If you’ve never been to
Austin
before, it’s something to behold. There’s a reason its motto is Keep Austin Weird. This laidback setting in the middle of
Texas
is certainly a welcomed anomaly. If you’re ready to get your feet wet in Bat City, here are some of the best things to do:
  • Head down to Sixth Avenue. As parents, you may find the crowd a bit on the young side, but you can hear phenomenal live music any night of the week.
  • Tour the Texas State Capitol. Built in 1885, the capitol building is an excellent demonstration of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. You can also take a free tour from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Saunter through Zilker Park. As Austin’s so-called most-loved park, Zilker has stunning views of downtown Austin and is home to the Zilker Botanical Garden.
  • Get some barbecue. Barbecue is a staple of the Austin diet, and it’s pretty tasty no matter where you go. Franklin, Terry Black’s and Kerlin are some of the most famous.
Although you’re only going to stay in Austin for a week, having

can help you out if you run out of gas, need a jump-start, or get a flat tire. If you need help finding the best rate on towing and labor coverage or you car insurance in general, let
