What are the best family activities in Costa Rica?

I’m thinking of taking my family on their first trip out of the country, and I’ve read Costa Rica is a good option. Are there a lot of family-friendly activities to do there?

That’s the perfect spot for a family adventure! You can find the best family activities in Costa Rica spread out all across the country—but the trips are definitely worth the driving! Plus, you’re guaranteed to see some incredible scenery as you trek through the country. Here are a few of the coolest activities for any age:
  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens: La Paz has a wide variety of nature experiences, from several tropical waterfalls and hiking trails to a wildlife sanctuary with jungle cats and monkeys.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park: Ever wanted to see a sloth in its natural habitat? In Manuel Antonio, you can get up close and personal with the wildlife and some of the country’s best beaches.
  • Museo de los Niños: With more than 40 interactive rooms and areas, this children’s museum will entertain and educate kids of any age.
  • Cloud forest zipline tour: Fly through the country’s iconic cloud forest from above on one of the many zipline tours, like Selvatura Park in Monte Verde.
  • Peñas Blancas River rafting: If your vacay needs some adrenaline, river rafting on the Peñas Blancas is the perfect combination of (kid-friendly) whitewater thrills and chill swim spots. As an added bonus, you’ll have a great view of the iconic Arenal Volcano!
  • Poás Volcano National Park: As the most accessible (and active!) volcano in Costa Rica, visiting Poás is a great activity for any age. Make sure to get there early—the clouds start to crowd the summit around 9 AM!
While it’s possible to get around the country on buses and public transportation, it’ll be easiest to get to all of these spots if you

. Luckily, all you’ll need to rent a car in Costa Rica as an American is your valid U.S. driver’s license, your original passport, and a valid tourist visa stamp. Be sure to note that your American
