What are suicide doors?

My dream car is a Tesla Model X, but my uncle keeps making jokes about suicide doors. I don’t get it! What are suicide doors?

Don’t let your uncle get you down;
Teslas
are awesome! Suicide doors refer to car doors that are designed to open from the rear hinge rather than the front hinge.
The term originally came about during the days of horse-drawn carriages when most doors opened this way. In those days, seat belts weren’t a thing! So, if you reached over to open or close a rear-hinged door while the carriage was moving, you were guaranteed an injury at least.
These doors have become an attractive feature in modern luxury vehicles. Some manufacturers call them French doors, coach doors, or FlexDoors. However, the last car with proper suicide doors was the 2002
Toyota Tundra
.
Your uncle is probably making this joke because the
Tesla Model X’s
falcon-wing doors remind him of suicide doors.
