What are some signs of water damage on a ceiling?

I’ve been house hunting for a couple of months now, and the places I’ve seen have been all over the place quality-wise. One, in particular, checked most of my boxes, but the ceilings had weird brown marks, and I was wondering if that could be water damage. What are some signs of water damage on a ceiling?

It’s good that you made note of that while you were
house
hunting—that does sound like it could potentially be a sign of water damage. Here are some common warning signs a ceiling might have water damage:
  • Cracks in ceiling
  • Sagging or bowing ceilings (especially if below a source of water, like a bathroom)
  • Peeling or chipping paint
  • Water stains (can vary in color, from green to brown to black)
Water damage could mean the house has structural problems or a mold and mildew infestation, so it’s important to look for signs of this as you look for a new home.
When you settle on the right house (hopefully free from water damage!), you’ll want to make sure it’s protected by the right home insurance policy. The
