What are some safe places to leave your car overnight?
I’m visiting my friend in the city and planning on spending the night. They don’t have parking spots at their apartment and I don’t want to pay for parking. Where are some safe places you can park overnight?

Parking is an issue in every city, and finding a safe parking spot can be an adventure in and of itself. However, you can normally park overnight in a few locations, and feel confident about your car’s safety while doing so:
- Big-box stores (especially if they’re open 24 hours)
- Casinos (if available and open 24 hours)
- Highway rest stops
- Local Welcome Center parking lot
- Public land that allows overnight camping
Before leaving your vehicle unattended for the night, be sure to check for any signs limiting parking hours—getting
towed
is an even bigger headache than finding parking! If nothing is available from the list above, you can always find street parking or parking decks, but you may be required to pay to use them.Additionally, you’ll want to know that you’re protected if something happens to your vehicle while you’re not around.
