What outdated car maintenance advice should I avoid? I know that there are some great car maintenance myths that some people still follow, but I want to avoid them if possible.

“One of the biggest car maintenance myths is that you have to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
No one’s quite sure of the origin, but it’s widely accepted that this was information disseminated by oil companies. In actuality, you probably only need to change your oil every 5,000 miles. In newer vehicles, this range can go even higher.
The idea that tire pressure doesn’t matter is another myth. When your tires are overinflated or underinflated, it can have a profound impact on the grip of the tire, fuel economy, and overall safety.
A final myth is that you should always buy an
extended warranty
. In truth, these are often outrageously priced products that don’t provide as much value as you’d think. Many companies will fight you on coverage, and, even more alarming, up to 55% of people who buy it never use it.
What’s not a myth: having the best coverage at low prices. The best way to protect you and other drivers at the time of an accident is to make sure you have proper coverage, but you don’t have to pay outrageous costs for it.
