What are some must-have products for a car emergency kit?

I want to pack my own emergency kit for my car, as it's often cheaper or at least more reliable than pre-packaged kits. What are some items I should definitely have in my car emergency kit?

“Car emergency kits are a great way to weather the storm (pun intended) if you get stranded somewhere or your car breaks down.
On top of a
AAA membership
or a car insurance policy with
towing and labor coverage
, it’s one of the smartest moves you can make. You can also look into
Jerry
. Jerry offers industry-leading roadside assistance through Urgently, which pays for an Uber if you need a tow and only costs $50 a year.
If you’re putting together your own kit, make sure to include the following:
  • A quart or more of motor oil
  • Jumper cables
  • Tool kit with basic tools and maybe a pocket knife
  • Tire patching kit
  • First-aid kit
  • Gallon of antifreeze or coolant
  • Non-perishable food items and water
  • Ice scraper
  • Flares or reflectors
Adding these to your trunk should give you a decent start, but you can always add more as you see fit.”
