Should I rent a car in Waikiki?

My husband and I are planning our honeymoon in Hawaii and we’re looking at hotels in Waikiki. We are hoping to explore the island while we are there. Should we rent a car for our stay, or will public transportation suffice?

Waikiki is the perfect destination for a honeymoon! If you aren’t planning on venturing far from the beaten path, public transportation like TheBus and the Waikiki Trolley can likely get you where you need to go, but if you’re looking for a bit more adventure, renting a car in Waikiki can allow you to explore the island at your own pace.
Here are a few things to consider when renting a car in Waikiki:
  • Some road signs will be written in the
    Hawaiian
language, so knowing how to properly pronounce or spell town names can be a big help.
  • You’ll have to be over 25 years old to rent a car in Hawaii. Some companies will rent out vehicles to drivers aged 21 to 24, but they charge an additional $10 to $20 per day.
  • Parking fees at Waikiki hotels can run you up to $45 per day.
  • Using your car horn on the island is considered rude!
If you do decide to rent a car in Waikiki, you’ll need
rental car insurance
. You can do this either through your own
car insurance
policy or with your credit card company.
