Should I rent a car in the Dominican Republic?
My boyfriend and I just booked a two-week trip to the Dominican Republic. We’ll spend time on the beach of course, but we want to go sightseeing too. Should we rent a car?

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country, and renting a car is a great way to explore at your own pace! However, if you’re not comfortable with aggressive traffic conditions, then taking the bus or using a taxi service might be a better option for you.
Driving in the Dominican Republic isn’t for the faint of heart. Cars move quickly, and you’ll need to dodge road obstacles like pedestrians, mopeds, cows, and potholes. If you still decide to rent a car, be sure to reserve your rental in advance to get the car you want at a lower rate.
Here are some tips for driving in the Dominican Republic:
- Trucks have the right-of-way over cars. Be prepared to yield to larger vehicles.
- If you come to an intersection, the right-of-way goes to the car on the larger street.
- Always have cash with you. You’ll need to pay tolls on many of the major roads.
- Most rental car companies in the Dominican Republic have restrictions against crossing the border, so don’t drive into Haiti with a rental car.
- Always use a navigation app. Road signs aren’t well maintained, and structures may not have address numbers.
