Should I rent a car in Santorini?

I’m heading to Santorini for a little solo travel over the summer. I’m trying to keep everything cheap, so I was hoping to skip the car rental and just use public transportation. Is that a good way to get around the island? Or should I rent a car in Santorini?

It’s easy to imagine that you wouldn’t need a rental car in Santorini. It’s an island, right—how hard can it be to get around? Unless you’re staying in Fira or you’re just planning to lounge at your hotel pool, you should rent a car in Santorini.
Here are some tips for renting a car in Santorini:
  • Most cars have standard (manual) transmissions: If you don’t know how to drive a stick shift, be sure to indicate that you need an automatic transmission when you reserve your car.
  • You’ll need a valid U.S. license: U.S. and U.K. drivers do not need an international driver’s permit to drive in Greece.
  • Reserve your car in advance: Especially if you’ll be traveling during the high season or need to ensure you have an automatic, you should reserve your vehicle in advance.
As you’re reserving your rental car, you should also check to make sure you have
rental car insurance
either through your own
car insurance
or through a credit card. If you don’t have coverage or you’re not sure it’s the best, let
