What a fun family vacation! Renting a car in Puerto Rico is the best way to get around the territory since they do not have an intercity train service. Puerto Rico does have public buses but they can be very time-consuming—not great for a fun trip.
To rent a car in Puerto Rico, you must be at least 25 years or older with a valid driver’s license and a credit card. Most major rental companies have locations on the island.
Here are some tips for renting a car in Puerto Rico:
- Make rental arrangements before your trip. The Winter months, usually from December to March, are busy for warm Puerto Rico, and booking a rental car ahead of time will help you save.
- Make sure your policy covers additional drivers if you anticipate sharing driving duties.
- Be prepared for tolls. There are many toll booths between San Juan and Ponce. Make sure to bring plenty of small bills and change with you as you venture the Puerto Rican roads.
