Should I rent a car in Greece?

I’m going to Greece for a conference, and of course I want to do some sightseeing while I’m there! I’ve heard the public transportation is pretty good, but my boss is giving me the option to rent a car. Should I rent a car in Greece?

Public transportation in Greece is pretty efficient, but renting a car will make getting around much easier. In a country that’s packed with historical sights, interesting cities, and beautiful beaches, driving allows you to stop and explore whenever you want!
Keep in mind that Greece does require an
international driving permit
to rent a car, so be sure and apply for one through the American Automobile Association (AAA) before you go. The rental car company will also require your U.S. driver’s license and your passport.
Greek roads are generally safe, but it’s a good idea to make sure that you have
rental car coverage
just in case you get into an accident. If you’re not sure if your policy covers rental cars, Jerry’s friendly agents are available to answer your questions and provide advice on the best coverage options!
Here are a few helpful tips for driving in Greece:
  • Try to rent a small, compact car. Parking in Greek cities can be tight.
  • Greek highways are loaded with tolls, so make sure you always have cash in the car.
  • Make sure to install an offline navigation app. Cell phone coverage can be spotty in some of the more remote parts of the country.
  • In Greece, diesel is cheaper than petroleum, so ask your rental company for a diesel car if you want to save on fuel.
