I recently got a ticket for speeding and I’m at a loss for what to do next. Should I fight it in court?

It’s completely reasonable to be overwhelmed after a ticket, especially if it carries some heavier penalties. You should go to court for a speeding ticket if you want to try to reduce your charges and avoid adding points to your driving record. You may need some evidence if you want to fight the charges—but if it’s your first offense, you could avoid some of the harsher penalties just by showing up.
Here are the options you usually have when handling a speeding ticket:
  • Plead not guilty: To go to court and defend a “not guilty” plea, you’ll need evidence to support your plea and legal representation. If you fail, you’re likely facing maximum charges.
  • Take a plea deal: By owning your violation and agreeing to plead “guilty”, a judge may offer options to reduce some of the harsher penalties, like
    points on your driving record
. You may still need legal representation.
  • Pay the ticket: Sometimes, the legal fees and court fees outweigh the costs of paying your ticket and taking the points on your record. This option lets you avoid court altogether.
If you choose not to fight the ticket, the violation will go on your driving record and your insurance rates could go up. Thankfully,
