Should home insurance be in joint names?

My fiancé and I just purchased our first home. We’re both on the deed and mortgage. We are required to get home insurance to finalize everything. Should our home insurance be in our joint names?

Congratulations on your first home! Since both you and your fiancé are on the mortgage, your home insurance should be in your joint names.
Insurance companies require that owners are the named insured on home insurance policies. When you’re a named insured, you can make changes to the policy and file claims. Although the second named insured is typically reserved for a spouse, you’ll want to add your fiancé to your
home insurance
as they are a joint owner.
With joint names, both you or your fiancé can speak with your insurance company. If one of you wasn’t listed, your insurance could refuse to speak with the unlisted person.
If you haven’t purchased your home insurance yet, you should use
Jerry
. The Jerry app collects quotes from top insurance companies like Safeco and Progressive in seconds. They even help cancel your old policy once you’ve made your pick.
