My Hyundai Elantra won't start and there’s no clicking noise

I bought a used car less than a month ago, and already it’s having problems! Could you please explain why my Hyundai Elantra won’t start and there’s no clicking noise when I try to start it? I’m worried this is going to be expensive to fix.

Based on what you’re describing, we can narrow the list of suspects down to a handful of usual culprits for why your
Hyundai Elantra
won’t start and there’s no clicking noise:
  • Battery issues are common in cars old and new, and in most cases like this, the car battery is the first thing a mechanic will look at. Make sure there’s no corrosion or muck on your battery terminals and then try
    getting a jumpstart
before calling a tow truck for help.
  • Blown fuses and relays are another common issue, and this is a cheap and easy problem to solve yourself. You can buy replacement fuses and relays at any car parts store and install them yourself without experience, saving you a small fortune at the mechanic.
  • Blown starters or starter solenoids are also common causes of cars not having a clicking noise when you try to start them. These are unfortunately more expensive to repair, so let’s hope it’s not this!
  • Other potential causes include problems with the alternator, a serpentine belt, the ignition switch, or wiring. Damaged or shorted-out wires, a blown wiring harness, a slipping belt … these things can prevent the engine from starting, and can even prevent that clicking sound when you turn the key.
  • This issue isn’t usually associated with a lack of the clicking noise, but a blown fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter can prevent the engine from starting normally. If all else fails, mechanics will typically look at these parts to see if there’s an issue.
Some of these repairs can get pricey, but hopefully your issue is as simple as getting a jump or replacing a fuse. If you bought the car from a used car dealership, call them and see if they can help out, since the purchase was made recently. We hope this helps and you can get back on the road soon!
