Is Utah an at-fault state?

We just moved to Utah from Arizona and we’re in the process of switching over our car insurance. I noticed that we’re required to have personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, though. Is Utah an at-fault state?

We wish you the best of luck as you transition from your
Arizona car insurance
plan to a
Utah car insurance
plan. As you might have guessed, Utah is NOT an at-fault state.
Utah is actually one of 12
no-fault states
.
Essentially, this means drivers are responsible for their own medical treatment after an accident, regardless of who’s at fault. That’s why
Utah car insurance laws
require you to carry a $3,000 minimum of
personal injury protection (PIP)
coverage—which ensures that you’re not left with excessive medical bills.
In Utah, you can only collect liability compensation for personal injuries under very limited circumstances, such as injuries resulting in permanent disability or dismemberment. That said, Utah functions off of a modified comparative negligence system when it comes to
property damage liability
.
Under this system, a driver can only collect liability damages if they are deemed less than 50% at fault for a collision, minus any percentage they are deemed at fault.
No-fault states often have higher car insurance premiums than at-fault states because of the added costs of their PIP insurance requirements. But with help from
