Is truck driving worth it?

I’m thinking about starting a career as a truck driver. I’ve got a few buddies who haul freight, and I’ve gotten mixed reviews. Some of them can’t stand it; some of them say they wouldn’t change a thing. I’m looking for a clear answer. Is truck driving a good career?

Your buddies on both sides of the argument have a point. Truck driving can be worth it, or it can be tough to stick out. It depends on what kind of person you are and what you’re passionate about.
Let’s break down the pros and cons of trucking so that you can get a good idea of whether you’re cut out for it.
Pros:
  • You get to be an independent worker. Your truck is your workplace, and you can run it however you want.
  • You get commercial driving training. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) allows you to operate all sorts of vehicles, from semi-trucks to school buses, should you decide 18-wheelers aren’t for you.
  • Once you’ve racked up some experience, you can earn serious cash—potentially over $100,000 a year.
  • You get paid to travel the nation!
Cons:
  • You’ll spend a lot of time away from home. Though lots of companies offer more flexible options for your schedule, you’ll still be away more often than you would be at another job.
  • You don’t have a kitchen. While that might not sound so horrible, it can be tough to find healthy, cheap options for food on the road.
  • Truck driving can be stressful—navigating around other drivers while making a delivery on time is no easy task.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide if you’re cut out for truck driving. If you like an independent environment, can handle high-stress tasks, and want to get paid to travel the country, trucking might be the perfect career for you.
