Is there a manual transmission available for the Chevrolet Volt?
My partner and I are looking at getting an electric car and we’re leaning strongly toward the Chevy Volt. But I’ve always driven a standard. Does the Chevy Volt come with a manual transmission?

It’s always exciting looking at what options are available when shopping for a new car! Unfortunately, the
Chevy Volt
doesn’t come with a manual transmission. Like most (but not all) other electric vehicles, it has a 1-speed transmission. This is an odd concept for some of us to wrap our minds around, but electric vehicles don’t need multi-speed transmissions. Their electric motors start generating full power as soon as they first turn over, and will continue producing power at that level as high as the vehicle revs.
That said, many automakers recognize the allure of the gear-shift feeling when you drive and are working to replicate it with multi-speed transmissions in the future. Right now, only a couple of two-speed transmission options are available for electric vehicles, and they’re both extremely expensive:
- The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo has a two-speed transmission and starts at $187,600.
- The Audi e-Tron GT is another electric two-speed vehicle, with a starting price of $101,000.
When you compare that to the most recent Chevy Volt’s brand new starting price of $38,995, a 1-speed transmission doesn’t sound too bad.
